Matariki 2013: Message from the Mayor
Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa.
This year’s celebrations have a particular focus on waka, navigation and voyaging withTe Matau a Māui (voyaging canoe), one of the many kaupapa explored and highlighted at the beginning of the Māori New Year.
The arrival of Te Matau a Māui to Te Whanganui a Tara will take place to mark the beginning of Matariki. Te Matau a Māui will arrive from Napier, sailed by Ngāti Kahungunu, and will be welcomedinto Wellington Harbour on Saturday 8 June by mana whenua Taranaki Whānui.
With its links to navigating using the stars, bringing this vessel into Wellington is a significant and appropriate opening event for Matariki.
There will be many fun and educational events taking place around Wellington during Matariki. Take advantage of the wonderful programme and enjoy yourself. There is something for everyone, from flax weaving at local community centres to the Matariki Concert at Te Papa featuring the heavenly vocal talents of Whirimako Black, Ria Hall, and Mihirangi.
Enjoy Matariki in our Smart Capital.
